1 acre of agricultural land costs £6000 approx when purchased in 10 acre lots,(the cost rises significantly when smaller paddock sizes up to £20,000 an acre)
1 acre= 4047 sq m
7 cells to form 1 "honeycomb allotment" = 35 sq m
so 115 "honeycombs allotments" per acre
so each "honeycomb allotment" costs £52 (before costs of purchase)
Then the site must be developed, plants purchased, profesional and legal costs covered, public liability insurance paid, accountants paid, web designers paid, gardener caretakers employed, tools sheds and polytunnels purchased and maintained, soil amendments purchased and applied, project administered and monitored.
Once these costs are covered after the first year hopefully,we will purchase more land so a second "honeycomb allotment" can be developed by each member so after 10 years each member will have 10 trees planted and have 70 cells of food to harvest covering approx 350 sq metres!
Each fruit tree will eventually yield roughly 50 pounds of fruit per year, add to this all the berries, salad crops, greens, culinary and medicinal herbs and the annual harvest is huge!
So for £3 a week and a bit of enjoyable gardening in a sociable atmosphere self sufficency in fresh fruit , vegetables and medicinal herbs for everyone is easily acheived!
